Manufacturers say that waist trainers will give you a fabulous hourglass figure and help you lose weight in the process. They work by reducing your waist size while enhancing your curves. On top of that, you’ll lose those love handles and look amazing without changing your diet and workout routine.
Some corsets increase sweating around the waist, which helps reduce fluid retention. Others claim to “dissolve” fatty tissues in the abdominal area. According to health experts, waist trainers affect your organs and bodily functions, causing long term damage. The medical community does not support the claims behind these products.

Waist training advocates claim that it’s the most effective method to shape your body and get a tiny waist. This practice forces your body into a new shape, shrinks your stomach, and helps reduce stubborn fat around your waistline.
The Truth about Waist Training
Unfortunately, waist training is just marketing hype. No actual studies support the benefits of wearing a corset. Medical professionals claim that waist training puts pressure on the internal organs, affecting the way they work. These accessories may increase your risk of heartburn, constipation, chronic pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, dizziness, and cardiovascular disorders.
Some experts say that waist trainers are perceived as effective just because they force you to eat less, which will inevitably lead to weight loss. However, once you stop wearing a corset, your waist will return to its natural size and shape. Some people, such as Cathie Jung, the woman with the smallest waist in the world, have taken this practice to the extreme. She wears a corset 24 hours a day and has over 100 waist trainers in her wardrobe.
Waist training sucks for more than one reason. First of all, it’s uncomfortable and dangerous to your health. Secondly, there is no such thing as spot reduction. You can’t shed fat from your waist only. Thirdly, waist training affects digestive function and puts you at risk for eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. If you don’t eat enough, you’ll develop nutritional deficiencies.
How Harmful Is Waist Training, Really?
While some people can wear a corset for years without any real harm done, this doesn’t apply to everyone. Cinching your waist tightly won’t make your waist smaller nor help you lose fat. Corsets limit your range of motion, restrict breathing, and damage your ribs and vital organs. Just because fitness models promote waist training, it doesn’t mean that it works or that it’s safe.
Researchers say that the claims made by manufacturers are bogus. Any results you get will be temporary. Even if you sweat and lose inches around the waist, you’ll gain them back as soon as you drink water. The damage caused by waist training may be permanent. Displaced organs and squashed rib cages are quite common among those who wear a corset on long term.
Because of the pressure placed on your organs, you’ll have a hard time digesting the food you eat. This leads to acid reflux, poor digestion, and overall discomfort. Waist training may also cause bruising of the skin and bones, oxygen shortage, and pulmonary edema. Other side effects include low energy, decreased blood flow, kidney disorders, blood clots, and pneumonia. Atrophy of the abdominal walls, visceral displacement, and weakened core muscles are common too. Latex corsets are particularly harmful to those with allergies.
These accessories also worsen indigestion and heartburn, compress your diaphragm, and push your small intestine, liver, and colon upward. Wearing a corset once in a while, such as when you’re attending a wedding or cocktail party, is harmless. But using one for the sole purpose of weight loss is just plain ridiculous.
